Tulle Waves

The rhythmic sounds of a punch card machine moving between metallic and industrial sounds with a regular bass drum.... In use in the embroidery factories in the 1990s, it has been recommissioned for the work Tulle Waves. Design drawings are transformed into data on the perforated cardboard, encoded and coded. Each hole has a defined meaning. A process of transformation from the visible to the invisible, encoding class and power relations of embroidery history.

Sentences from the poem Mein Schlaf kommt aus dem Meer by Kundeyt Şurdum, who migrated to Austria in 1996 and died there in 2017, became a design drawing for the work. Their meaning was punched onto thin perforated cardboard and encoded there. On the soundscape of a composition of sounds from the machine, excerpts of the visualized code flicker across the screen. The staccato-like  movement of the perforated images is reminiscent of the flickering film images of the Kinothek Lustenau, which showed films for migrant  workers in the 1990s. Another screen shows hands unsuccessfully trying to thread yarn through the eye of a needle, a search for strategies to decode non-narrated stories.
