T'RÄUME - "Spaces and Dreams"
Results of the ZOZAN Art Intervention 06
The workshop was dedicated to the question of how we can perceive the Schaumbad Graz as a transnational space of memory. What makes a space transnational ? How do we capture encounters, when in such a way different memories can come together? The starting point was the spatial and architectural photographs by the multi-media artis Mehmet Emir. The narratives of his photographs range from the massacre of the Kurds in Dersim in 1937/38 to their memory in a post-Nazi migration society.
The aim was not only to reflect on the history of these images, but also to view the images against the background of one's own history and to understand this process as a creative process of one's own artistic work.
The discussion, the video and photo shoots and their interpretation focused on the question of how the landscape connects the stories and enables a cross-border narrative. We asked about the parallels of the river Mura that surrounds us in Schaumbad Graz and the trees that were flooded and threatened by a dam construction, and how the historically important city of Hasankeyf, which is mainly inhabited by Kurds and Armenians, is also under water due to dam construction. Among the numerous companies jointly responsible for these projects is a company from Graz.
Thus, different stories emerge alongside and with each other, which are represented in the exhibition in a variety of ways, linked by individual and collective memories and presented using different media, from painting to time-based media.
